Emily to be eased into music scene THE music industry is a weird and wonderful place. And the latest example is the mystery surrounding Australian Idol runner-up Emily Williams (right) and her has-she or hasn't-she a record deal. We've been receiving so many emails, letters and calls from Emily fans outraged by her apparent disappearance. But after weeks of speculation, Sony BMG yesterday confirmed that it had signed Williams. The 21-year-old will give her job as a forklift operator in Adelaide the heave-ho and relocate to Melbourne to write songs. In the wake of Kate DeAraugo's rushed album failing to set the charts alight, Sony BMG's people are taking a different approach. While Williams will release a single in the second quarter of the year, execs want their new star to develop creatively with the help of industry experts. There has been plenty of talk about whether Williams would get a contract after she lost the third season's Idol title to DeAraugo. At first, it seemed Williams, the untrained vocalist judges said had the best voice in the history of the competition, would miss out. The fact that Sony BMG already had seven Idols on its books, and that some people said she was too similar to Idol Paulini were working against her. Then after weeks of speculation, and the signing of faux-punk Lee Harding, came word that Williams had been signed by Sony BMG after all. Williams confirmed the deal to The Eye's Adelaide colleagues last month, adding that she had known it was in the pipeline. "Sony called me up and basically said, 'We're not letting another label get you'." But darned if we might, we just couldn't get an official word from her people until yesterday. Williams' two-year-old daughter Asia was cared for by relatives in Melbourne while in the Idol house, which may explain why she's moving here instead of Sydney. |
