Title: Gay Aussie musicians
Description: finally stepping out of the closet

There is an article on Gay Australian Musicians and how they are now 'coming out' on the MSN site...there are quite a few mentioned, but I'll just put the article and Anthony's section here, it's a rather symapthetic and factual treatment, very good to see. I'll add the link to the end if you want to read the rest.

Gay Aussie musicians finally stepping out of the closet

In the last couple of decades, many international musicians including George Michael, k.d. lang and members of bands, such as R.E.M and the Scissors Sisters have proved that being openly gay or bisexual doesn't mean commercial suicide.
However, the old fear of performers coming out resulting in plummeting record sales seemed to still keep many high profile Australian musicians in the closet.

That is until recently where a string of high profile local pop stars decided to be open about being gay... or in some cases not straight.

Former Savage Garden vocalist Darren Hayes lead the way a couple of years ago, and in his wake, performers as varied as folk-pop superstar Missy Higgins, Idol runner-up Anthony Callea and indie rocker Nathan Hudson have all decided to talk openly about their sexuality.

It seems that the media might have got a bit carried away trying to out performers who are happily heterosexual. Just ask Daniel Johns!

It's pretty clear how Anthony Callea felt living life in the closet. After he was accidentally and very publicly outed by media weatherman Vic Larusso on prime-time radio in early 2007, the pint-sized singer expressed relief, saying; "I'm looking forward to living a life with no barriers and not having to worry about saying the right thing [anymore]."

It had been a difficult road for the ARIA Award winner. Growing up in Melbourne's Italian community, he suffered major depression and had to see a psychologist because his sexuality made him "hate" himself. And those same issues followed him right up until he began bidding for stardom as an Australian Idol finalist in his early twenties, when rumours began surfacing about his homosexuality.

Callea denied it at the time, but now says he regrets the decision to keep quiet, even if it was only so he wouldn't be known as "the gay contestant from Idol".

Now 25, Larusso's slip-up probably saved Callea's sanity. It's even earned praise from openly gay Australian High Court judge Justice Michael Kirby, who said; "In terms of influencing popular culture and understanding of the reality of human sexual diversity, I would trade 10 judges for one popular singer."

As Callea told ninemsn last year: "That was a big step for me and I was actually speaking with my manager in Brisbane in February [2007] saying; 'I'm mentally prepared and really comfortable with myself now to take the next step' so when that whole event happened with the radio station I think it was just something telling me; 'You should just go ahead and do it now'.

"I really don't care you either take me or leave me you can't do anything about the way someone is," he said.

As for his personal life, Callea was with his partner, 'Paul' for about three years, after meeting him during the Idol process but their relationship dissolved last year. Now, it seems Callea has found love again, this time with Tim "the only gay in the Bay" Campbell.

The former Home and Away actor met Callea while the two were starring in the musical Rent together, and publicly came out last year (though apparently it wasn't so much of a secret in his private life, having just split from his partner of 11 years), saying he and Callea were supporting each other through their respective break-ups.

Just before this year's Valentines Day, Campbell admitted to Vega Melbourne that he and Callea were "a bit of an item at the moment we have gotten to a point where we are very happy together."

And Anthony's happy he doesn't have to live life with barriers anymore.
