JESSICA Mauboy hopes to switch from the recording studio to the big screen, with the singer auditioning for a new Australian film.

The Young Divas singer and former Australian Idol contestant is in the running for a lead role in the film adaptation of the successful Aboriginal theatre musical Bran Nue Dae.

"Jessica has got that extraordinary voice and that incredible quality that just makes you fall deeply in love with her,'' said producer Robyn Kershaw, who has been working on the project for more than 20 years. There is something quite delicious andsweet and beautiful about Jessica.''

Written by Jimmy Chi and his band mates from Kuckles, Bran Nue Dae was hailed as the first Aboriginal musical when it premiered in Perth in 1990.

Set in the summer of 1965 in the pearling port of Broome, it follows the adventures of young Aboriginal boy Willie and hisgirl, Rosie.

Ernie Dingo has been cast as Willie's father, Uncle Tadpole.
Blackfella Films' Rachel Perkins will direct the film while Stephen Page is choreographer.
