Idol bores Guy SebastianDecember 03, 2007
THE death knell for Australian Idol has tolled again with the show's original winner Guy Sebastian saying it's too boring.
The Fro, in Brisbane yesterday to promote K-Mart's Wishing Tree fund, told Qconfidential he found the 2007 season "boring" and said the fifth season of the talent quest seemed to be more about contestants "pushing their own agendas" than just about performing.
"There were a lot of people who were quite calculated in their use of the show and they quite blatantly used it to get a platform for their careers and I think that because of that, some of the essence of the show was lost," Guy said.
"Every week there was a theme and it was an opportunity for the performers to get up on stage and really entertain. But there were some people who just didn't get into it and kept sticking to their same styles week in, week out, which is a bit boring and self-indulgent.
"Marty Simpson is a perfect example of that. He never got into the show at all."
So, does Guy think the Idol formula is losing its sheen?
"I guess so," he said. "The more you do something, the less mystique it has."
And, so far, the proof is in the pudding. Natalie Gauci has made history as the first winner of the show to not crack the No.1 spot on the charts with her debut single Here I Am, which has peaked at No.2.
Guy stated the obvious yesterday, acknowledging Matt Corby was likely the more marketable of the final two. "He is definitely the dream package," Guy said.
