Title: Ricki-Lee's in tune with gay fans

Ricki-Lee Coulter is the first to admit she has a lot of gay fans, so when the opportunity presented itself to sing on stage in a gold sequin dress at one of Brisbane's biggest gay events, the singer immediately said yes.

Raised on the Gold Coast, Coulter rose to fame as a contestant on the second series of Australian Idol.

She was voted out half way through the final twelve, but released a solo album before joining up with three other Idol alums to form the Young Divas.

Now out on her own again, Coulter is eagerly awaiting the chance to play a large gig in her home state.

Every Sunday night at the Family nightclub in Fortitude Valley, hundreds of members of the local gay community come together to party at Fluffy.

It's not labelled as gay night, but it might as well be. The long-standing institution has grown in popularity in recent times.

So it's no wonder organisers decided to throw the first-ever Fluffy Festival, featuring a stellar line up of DJs, performers and drag queens.

Coulter is no stranger to the gay community. She has an impressive gay following, and has performed in gay clubs around the country.

"My gay fans have been so supportive of me from the very beginning," she said.

Her affection for her gay fans landed her in hot water recently, after the video clip for her latest single Love Is All Around stirred up a hornets nest.

"It's one of two songs on the album that I didn't write, but I instantly fell in love with it from the first time I listened to it," she said.

"I knew I loved it because I immediately started thinking about what I could do for a video clip."

One of her ideas was to represent all of the different types of love, be it between friends, family or lovers.

And of course, the form of love that's caused so much controversy stems from a kiss between two men.

"We've had to do an edited version of it because the clip had been classified as PG in some time slots," she said.

"My record label were freaking out and saying we should just cut it out, but I was adamant it was going to be in no matter what."

While an edited version of the clip was made, Coulter said she insisted it was only used when absolutely necessary.

"It's something I'm very passionate about.

"We've got an old couple kissing and a young couple kissing, and the way I look at it is that it shouldn't be viewed any differently.

"If we're allowed to have other people kissing, we should be able to have a gay couple kissing too.

"There's a lot worse in film clips these days than two boys in love and kissing."

After a rehearsal on Friday with her band, Coulter is confident her performance at the Fluffy Festival will impress.

She's even given her band strict instructions on how to dress, with an emphasis on fabulous.

"I'll be in sequin, head-to-toe, either in a black dress or silver and gold dress.

"I think I'll go with the silver and gold, just to stand out on stage like a big disco ball."

She won't be the only fabulous lady taking the stage - a number of high-profile drag queens will represent on the day.

However Coulter said she didn't seek any fashion advice for Sunday's big performance.
