Since winning Australian Idol last year, Stanmore's Damien Leith has had little rest thanks to a new baby, a new album, a book deal and an upcoming tour. He's busy, to be sure, but he is loving every minute of it.
Leith said that six-week-old Jagger Ramone and one-year-old Jarvis Dion were keeping him on his toes, but he and wife Eileen had it under control.
"We're working off shifts now but we are doing well," he said.
"It's a 24-hour job but it's fantastic, he is absolutely adorable."
Leith's single, 22 Steps, and album, Where We Land, will be released next month and, as if that wasn't enough work, the singer is also due to publish a novel later this year - an achievement he said he is extremely proud of.
"Music is one of my biggest passions and writing is something I have been doing before I began in music," he said.
The book is a dramatic physiological thriller. "If anything, people will get a surprise from the book because music is very personal but a book can pretty much be about anything."
Now he has had time to gain perspective on Idol, Leith said it had been an intense experience, but one that had opened up many opportunities.
He said things had happened very quickly after he won and, although life did eventually return to something resembling normality, he was now heading back onto that fast-paced road.
"It's almost like starting up again," he said. "I still have the Idol platform and the fans, hopefully, but I find that I kind of want to prove myself again."
The singer, who has written nine of the songs on the upcoming album and has already started on a second novel, said his focus was now about trying to find a balance between work and family, while trying to make the most out of every opportunity.
