Big Brother 'atrocious' says PM

PRIME Minister John Howard has branded reality TV show Big Brother "atrocious" - but says he can't take it off air.

Asked about a recent incident of swearing on the reality TV show, Mr Howard said it was not his business to censor the program.

He said only broadcaster Network Ten and the advertisers could stop it from broadcasting.

"Well, I think Big Brother is an atrocious program, I said that last year and my view hasn't changed," Mr Howard told Southern Cross Broadcasting.

"I think in this situation people in my position should express a view, but in the end the channel's got to make a decision and the advertisers on the channel have got to make a decision.

"But, if you ask me my opinion, I'll tell you, I think it's an atrocious program."

Mr Howard said he believed it was better to err on the side of taste and bad language should not be used on television because it could offend people.

"If people say 'Oh, that's what people use in normal conversation', that is true, but there are a lot of things we might use, might say and do in normal life that you wouldn't do in a public fashion, because it offends the sensibilities of other people and I don't think you should," he said.
