Our first Idol finds inspiration at home By Melissa Phillips After travelling the world writing tunes for his long-awaited third album, Guy Sebastian found his inspiration closed to home. The 25 year old says he was just 'in the wrong headspace, going down the wrong track'. "I did the whole overseas trip thing for the third album, going away to write the album" the former Adelaidean says. "I went to London, New York, Scandinavia and other parts of the work and it just felt a bit contrived". "You really need to step away and reassess, and that's what I did and I go a passion for it (songwriting) again." Sebastian took the brave step of throwing all of his material away and starting again. Sitting on a jetty near his Sydney home be broke through the writing barrier penning Never Ever Said Goodbye."That song (released on I-tunes but not on the album) was just the real breakthrough for me and the album, Closer to the Sun, just sarted from there." Sebastian also decided to step out from behind the keyboards and pick up a guitar. "I wrote most of this one on a guitar and I just really enjoyed the feel of doing it that way. This album rocks a bit more and I will be able to rock out a bit more on stage." Elevator Love is followup to Taller, Stronger, Better, the first single from the album. Closed to the Sun is out now. credits: GSOFH |

Closer to the Sun is, to my mind, the album Guy was meant to make. It doesn't take from the first two, but it IS the one that should have arrived, preferably now. His big fans are well aware he can rock it, but there was nothing 'out there' for the normal public to hear. This album fixes that problem with three great rocky tracks. After that he's taken time to sprinkle in the heart tearing bluesy ballads he does so well, tossed in a reggae type, the anthemic Taller Stronger Better, the joyful and fun Boyfriend, a couple of funk / soul tracks and finished with Be Mine, the toe curler of the album. Some fans have been thrown by its sheer diversity, but I've welcomed the fact that he's now showcased just how versatile he can be. Itunes even throws in absolute jazzy Never Ever Said Goodbye (this now appears as a track on the 2nd single Elevator Love). In a nutshell? THE VOICE - has never been better. And I love the fact that his evolution as an artist and writer is continuing at a heady pace. |
