IDOL's loose cannon judge Mark Holden was on the backtrack treadmill yesterday after he assured booted finalist Dean Geyer he would be offered a record deal by SonyBMG on Monday night's verdict show.

Holden sounded typically confused trying to explain the premature announcement to Nova's Melbourne breakfast host Dave Hughes.

He had claimed SonyBMG chairman Denis Handlin revealed Geyer would be offered a deal in a phone conversation on Monday.

But with his mouth spinning faster than his head, Holden changed tack saying: "Dean will be offered a tonne of things from a tonne of people... he's gonna be offered something.''

When Hughes asked about the alleged phone conversation with Handlin, Holden offhandedly replied: "never believe what you see on television''.

A senior SonyBMG staffer confirmed Handlin had not discussed Geyer's future prospects with the label beyond agreeing with Holden that the 20-year-old heartthrob had talent and appeal.

"You certainly have to love Holden's enthusiasm and passion,'' the diplomatic staffer told music writer Kathy McCabe.

"But as we have always said we will not announce our plans until the final is over; we are focusing on who is going to win.''

Geyer himself said yesterday Holden's golden promises were the first he'd of a possible deal.

"I haven't signed anything and nobody has asked me to,'' he said.
