CASEY Donovan is back in the recording studio and says being dumped by major label Sony BMG has allowed her to produce the music she wants. / The Daily Telegraph The 18-year-old former Australian Idol winner played her first gigs on the weekend since being unceremoniously punted by her record company in July.
Speaking for the first time about her exit from Sony BMG, Donovan said yesterday she had no hard feelings against the label for letting her go after the mixed success of her debut album For You.
"They were letting go of a lot of people and I was just one of them," she said. "But that just gives me the opportunity to do what I want to do . . . play with the people I want to play with."
Donovan's debut single Listen With Your Heart reached No. 1 on the charts in 2004 and her album debuted at No. 2.
While the album shipped more than 210,000 copies to be certified three times platinum, about 100,000 were reportedly returned by retailers.
The Bankstown teen said she was back recording a new six-song EP which she hopes will be out independently before Christmas.She spent yesterday recording vocals with her band in her bassist's makeshift studio in Ashbury.
Donovan has made several 20-minute corporate performances since she departed Sony BMG but her gigs at the Sandringham Hotel in Newtown with fellow Idol Dan England on Friday and Saturday night were her first proper shows in six months.
"On the Friday night I couldn't sit still, I was so nervous," Donovan said of her return.
"I did two new songs at the Sando just to try them out. The reaction was pretty good."

Btw I was at both Casey's Friday and Saturday nights gigs and she was absolutely awesome!!!!! I was asked by Casey's step-dad if I would video the performance for Casey, and am waiting for approval to upload a vid for fans to see. I am not allowed to post any footage of Casey's original songs (due to stict guidlines within her contract), but may be able to post her singing "Over The Rainbow" which she did absolutely brilliantly. Will let you know if I get approval.
Oh and Dan was great too!
