HiT Review: Closer To The Sun

by Cameron Adams

It's the stock-standard pop star cliche - banging on about how diverse their album is, which usually means there's a few slow songs in among the fast ones.

Here Sebastian zooms from guitar pop to jazz; gospel ballads to reggae. But there's one genre noticably absent - R&B.

The album's never better than its first four minutes - Elevator Love - wisely the next single. Clearly borrowing from the Max Martin school of modern pop, it echoes Backstreet Boys' Just Want You to Know and is a song to soundtrack the summer on a radio station near you - because it sounds like everything else currently on a radio station near you.

Sebastian belts out the lyrics (about an up and down relationship, not a quickie in a confined space - remember who we're talking about) while the guitars and `80s keyboards pound away behind him.The riffs keep firing through Out of Place, while Trade This Love shows Sebastian's been dusting off his Lenny Kravitz albums by throwing some funk into the mix. Meanwhile the title track rewinds past Lenny for a Beatleseque hippy romp that suits Sebastian's voice.

Boyfriend disses a deceitful lady whose crime was to not own up to the fact she's in a relationship, while I'm Gon Getcha veers dangerously close to Shaggy territory. 1st single Taller, Stronger, Better, is his own I Believe I Can Fly - but as event songs go it's slightly uneventful. Wet ballad Can't Stop a River, written by Seal, at least has a bluesy twist, better is his own Cover on My Heart, a big ballad dripping in heart and lush production.

The album closes with a smokey jazz number, Be Mine. More musical than most (he wrote and recorded most of this album at his home), here Sebastian displays a few more sides to himself and carries them off.

In a word: warm, 3 stars

Cameron Adams hates all the idols except for Shannon...if he gives it 3 starts you know the albums got to be good!

its an odd review, because the words aren't too bad (LOL)

3 stars is okay - and really, as I said on the OS - how many people actually buy or don't, because of reviews. I've NEVER bought music that I haven't personally wanted and I've NEVER read a review.

btw
ag on the OF enlarged the pic with it. Get ready girls!!!!
