ECCENTRIC Australian Idol star Bobby Flynn almost got his first big break fronting Tommy Lee's new band Supernova.
The afro-coiffed Brisbanite – who has polarised viewers with his refusal to bow to convention – was serving coffee and sandwiches at the Tivoli when Foxtel's Rockstar Supernova team blew into town earlier this year.
Rockstar executive producer RP Sekon said they were conducting auditions for the band's new lead singer when Flynn, who had been feeding them all day, asked if he could have a go.
Sekon said when they sent the camera crew to ask Flynn why he wanted to be a rock star he replied: "Well it beats cutting up sandwiches".
He said the lanky singer, with his trademark red locks, played an impressive original song called By Any Means, followed by a rock song cover.
"Thank goodness he did, because he was absolutely brilliant," he said.
"He came out and blew the judges away."
Sekon said the judges loved his look and his voice so much that they passed him to the next stage in Sydney.
In Sydney the American judges were also impressed by Flynn's unique talent and agonised over sending him to LA for the finals.
"In the end it was more about tattoos than talent for Bobby – they couldn't see him fronting Supernova and Tommy Lee," Sekon said.
Australian betting agencies Centrebet and Sportingbet both have Flynn as their third favourite to win, paying $4 and $4.20 respectively for every dollar spent.
