Idols to Start A Disco Inferno6/10/2006
Sure, I’ll admit that when I heard this week’s theme was Disco, I was slightly concerned for the lads in our finals group. Scrap that; I was petrified on their behalf. But now that we’re announcing this week’s song choices, it’s plain to see that every one of our 8 brilliant performers have made courageous and clever selections.
For starters, you can imagine Chris Murphy tearing it up as he busts out with a blistering version of Wild Cherry’s Play That Funky Music. There could be a few trademark Murphy screams during that rendition. After being criticised for bringing too many ballads to the Idol stage, Damien Leith has been forced out of his comfort zone by the Disco genre. He’s the first to admit that Disco is not his strong point but a great rendition of Kool & The Gang’s Celebration will prove that the smooth crooner has diversity.
Now, here’s the most bizarre choice on the list. Can you imagine Dean Geyer doing Gloria Estefan’s Turn The Beat Around? No, either can I, but I’ll be looking forward to seeing what Dean can manufacture from a theme that is clearly not his specialty. In stark contrast, Jessica Mauboy seems perfectly suited to the theme. The sassy youngster is sure to have a ball with On The Radio, originally by Donna Summer. Let’s hope she’s recovered from that ‘scratchy throat’ and returns to top form.
I’d pay money to see Bobby Flynn sing Rick James’ Super Freak. In fact, I’d pay a lot of money! After bouncing back last week, the confident but unpredictable Mr Flynn is sure to dazzle us with an explosive rendition of an incredibly funky and sexy tune. While we’re talking about funk, imagine how much Ricky Muscat will dig the chance to sing Kool & The Gang’s Get Down On It! After being criticised for his song choice last week, expect a dynamic effort from Ricky.
Lavina Williams will feel right at home on Disco night, bringing a sassy version of Best Of My Love (originally by Emotions) to the Idol stage. The soulful diva has come so close to scoring a Touchdown; will Sunday night be the right occasion for Mark Holden to deliver his trademark award? You can assume that Lisa Mitchell would have found song choice difficult this week but the Albury singer/songwriter has cleverly chosen a tune that represented the merging of punk and disco in 1979: Blondie’s Heart Of Glass.
Don’t miss a split-second of the action when 8 fantastic performers tackle a fun but tough theme as Idol goes Disco. Can the contestants match our own Marcia Hines on the dancefloor? To find out, tune in on Sunday night as Australian Idol continues on Network Ten.
