Ex Idol Finds Going Tough
December 1, 2005 - 12:00AM

Marty Worrall 'the bald, rock guy' from last year's Australian Idol has revealed that releasing his first single One Day has almost sent him broke.

Worrall and his now fiance Helen Morris put everything on the line for his career and the singer admits they are far from popping the champagne.

Unlike his fellow contestants Anthony Callea and Casey Donovan who signed with highly-esteemed label Sony BMG, Worrall signed with Newcastle-based independent label Style Music.

Style Music owners Jodi and Phil Tweed signed Worrall after their young son was moved to tears by Worrall's performances on the TV show.

Mr Tweed and Worrall penned One Day together.

And while the performer who hails from Kerang, Victoria, is pleased with the finished product he says releasing independently has been tough.

"It would have been great to be signed to a major record label," said Worrall, 26 who relocated from Sydney to the Hunter region this week.

"That opportunity never came, but the independent option did," he said.

"I went with it, but it's been extremely frustrating. With the big labels everything gets done for you but this way you do it all yourself. We haven't made any money and I don't know that we will. We sure have learnt how to eat cheap!"

Worrall also said the Australian Idol tag hasn't helped with getting One Day in-store for the public.

"A lot of the distributors we approached said 'not another idol' and won't stock it," he said.

"That's frustrating because we're all musicians in our own right and I have worked hard for years for this."

While Worrall has put immense pressure on himself to keep his profile public, he recently took time out to propose to his English girlfriend of three-and-half years.

On dusk Worrall took Helen to the Hunter Valley Garden's where a string quartet was playing and a ring waiting.

"It was very romantic and the best thing was Helen didn't suspect a thing," he smiles.

"We have been through so much together it was great to take our relationship to the next level."
