Idol's 2004 winner, Kalan Porter, has not been resting of his laurels.
The soft-spoken 20-year-old is hard at work on a second album, even while his first record, the double-platinum 219 Days, is still feeling the momentum that earned him Juno nominations for album of the year, artist of the year and pop album of the year.
The new album, according to his management team, will be at least two thirds written or co-written by the musically diverse Porter, who plays violin, viola, guitar and piano.
His involvement in writing multiple songs on his first release led to its personal feel, and the next is expected to further showcase his songwriting skills.
Written from home in Canada as well as in New York and Los Angeles, the new CD is slated for international release.
With his first single, "Awake in a Dream," Porter earned the impressive honour of selling more singles than any Canadian artist. He has also already won three Chart Attack awards and a MuchMusic Video Award.
From writing songs in his basement to recording tracks in the studio, the cherub-faced Canadian mega-star has definitely left behind the anonymity he once had in his hometown of Medicine Hat, Alta. But he isn't complaining.
"It's been a little weird. I still feel like the same average, normal guy… It's a lot of fun," Porter told CTV's eTalk Daily.
Even after months of performing in front of frenzied fans and inciting screams loud enough to blow both eardrums, this Idol says he hasn't let the hype get to his head.
"I'm just trying to stay focused on what I came into this whole thing to do and stay focused on where I was before all this…playing at little cafes where no one's listening to you," Porter said.
