Whether they've already been eliminated or are still gunning for Idol gold, all members of Canadian Idol's Top 10 will take their place in recording history this week with the release of Spotlights, the Season 4 compilation CD.
Coming out on Tuesday, Aug. 22, the album features the competitors performing some of their favourite song from this year's series, including:
1. Ashley Coulter - "I'm the Only One" (Melissa Ethridge)
2. Brandon Jones - "Lady" (Kenny Rogers)
3. Chad Doucette - "Tonight I Wanna Cry" (Keith Urban)
4. Craig Sharpe - "This I Promise You" (N'Sync)
5. Eva Avila - "Angel" (Sarah McLachlan)
6. Kati Durst - "I Hope You Dance" (Lee Ann Womack)
7. Rob James - "Let's Stay Together" (Al Green)
8. Sarah Loverock - "I Don't Want to Be" (Gavin DeGraw)
9. Steffi DiDomenicantonio - "White Flag" (Dido)
10. Tyler Lewis - "Here Without You" (3 Doors Down)
Idol's musical director/band leader, Orin Isaacs, said the recording sessions couldn't have gone better, especially considering the elevated level of talent in this year's Top 10.
"Every year the crop of kids just keeps on getting better," he told Eye on Idol. "When it came time and we hit the record button, they all nailed their performances and they did it in less time then we had last year and a fraction of the time I'd usually get to cut a song on a regular record.
"But then again, this Top 10 is anything but regular. This record is proof."
So, while not everyone ends up as the Canadian Idol, that doesn't mean the eliminated members of the Top 10 leave with nothing to show for their hard work. Here's what they had to say about their experience in the studio:
Tyler:
To know that my voice is going to be on a CD that people are going to buy, and listen to, it's amazing. I could get used to that.
Eva:
It felt like the earth had stopped turning... I am in a studio doing a song that I love. It was wonderful, I felt like I was in my own little world.
Brandon:
In a studio getting ready to record an album, it's just a surreal moment.
Kati:
I learned more subtle things about recording that are a little more intricate, that you don't notice as much when you're performing live.
Steffi:
A couple times a day you pinch yourself and you're like, OK, so I'm not asleep.
Craig:
It's really about being in the studio. I've always wanted to be in here. This is my dream and I'm actually living it.
Chad:
I think it's a song that definitely shows off my voice and what I'm capable of. It's a country tune but it kind of has a harder edge to it.
Ashley:
I think performing live you have a lot of adrenaline going. Especially for me... I do not like to sit still. Being in the studio, it's a calmer feeling. You're taking the moment to perfect all those notes that do show up on an album.
Sarah:
I like to do the rocky blues stuff and the soulful blues stuff and this is definitely good for me to show my upbeat personality.
Rob:
If you really want to make it heartfelt and true, you've got to dig deep and inevitably you always learn something new about yourself. This is my element, I love this.
