If you’re a fan of Australian radio, it’s likely that Josh Zepps, host of Idol Backstage, has made you choke on your Wheaties. With his irreverent but hilarious sketches on Southern Cross Broadcasting, Josh has attracted a strong following of avid listeners and received Australian radio’s highest accolade, an Australian Commercial Radio Award.
Beginning his career as a broadcast journalist, Josh soon found he simply couldn’t take events seriously, always providing a comical account of sober situations. Naturally, he was attracted to improv and became a popular award-winning comedian at Australia’s biggest improv event, The Cranston Cup.
Australian viewers will know Josh from his work on Australian television, including as a panelist on thecomedychannel’s Campaign, as George W. Bush on Pizza, and as John Howard in sketches on A Current Affair. His knack for impersonations also drew crowds to his debut play at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, entitled The Howard Years (featuring the Alexander Downer Jazz Dancers).
Dividing his time between two countries, Josh is one of the few Australian comedians to establish himself in both Australia and the USA, regularly gracing New York stages but just as comfortable in Aussie comedy venues.
He has performed live on 42nd Street with colleagues from Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Da Ali G Show, and currently reaches a national American audience each week on Starz TV’s Stand Up Or Shut Up. Is it any wonder the team at Australian Idol is thankful (and slightly frightened) to welcome this fine performer back to his homeland as host of Idol Backstage?
