THE second season of Singapore Idol has been hit by its first glitch.
.
After announcing on Thursday's results show that Mathilda D'Silva was through to the Top 12 along with Emilee Kang, MediaCorp TV Channel 5 said on Friday that a mistake had been made.
.
In fact, D'Silva did not secure enough viewers' votes to make the next round. Rival contestant Nurul Maideen did.
.
Channel 5 said the change in the results was due to "a technical glitch" which resulted in the loss of telepoll votes for a few hours during the voting period.
.
On Wednesday, D'Silva had given the season's best vocal performance with her rendition of Aretha Franklin's Chain of Fools, with all the judges saying that she deserved a spot in the final 12.
.
According to Selena Ho, vice-president of Network Programming and Promotions 5, the judges agreed to have D'Silva take over Nurul's spot among the wild cards, who will compete for the remaining four spots in the Top 12 next Wednesday.
.
"I'm happy for Nurul. The numbers speak for themselves," D'Silva said ina statement.
.
"I'm psyched to be given another chance as I've been selected as a wild card by the judges. And I'll do my best to prove that they have made the right selection."
.
Nurul, who gave a decent — if occasionally shaky — delivery of Emotions from Destiny's Child, said: "I'm ecstatic to hear the good news and I'll do my best not to disappoint my family, friends and supporters.
.
"I wish Mathilda all the best."
.
Nurul will thus be joining contestants Kang, Jonathan Leong, Paul Twohill, Rahimah Rahim, Jasmine Tye, Hady Mirza and Joakim Gomez in the Top 12.
.
The results for the first three episodes and the revised result for Thursday's episode of Singapore Idol have been independently checked by KPMG.
.
Organised and produced by Channel 5, the Singapore version follows the familiar Idol programme format, jointly owned by FremantleMedia and 19TV.
