In 2003, Paulini was ridiculed on Australian Idol by judge Ian "Dicko" Dickson when she wore a Charlie Brown gold dress.
A blunt Dicko called her fat.
Since then, she's appeared on Celebrity Overhaul, losing five kilos, and has maintained a strict fitness regime.
"I go to the gym every day for 45 minutes and I know exactly what I want to do," she said.
"I used to go to the gym and not really do anything, just to feel better.
"But now I'm serious and I go in to the gym, work out and leave."
Paulini said while not having huge personal demons from her body weight and image during Idol, she still couldn't believe how much better her trimmer, fitter body made her feel.
"It's great to go to an event in a great dress knowing how fit I am," she said.
"It's also great because I know all the hard work has paid off."
Paulini is keen to point out she has no plans to emulate Hollywood party girls Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie and get any thinner.
She also admitted that perhaps Dicko's comment was a positive, though she was very embarrassed at the time.
"I guess what Dicko said made me aware that image is so important in this business," Paulini said.
