A crowd of almost 8,000 rock and hip hop fans have crammed into Darwin's amphitheatre for this year's Bass in the Grass festival.

With pre-sold tickets sold out across Darwin, organisers had prepared for a bumper crowd with free buses and the promise of bottled water all day.

But not all interstate acts got a warm welcome.

When Lee Harding from Australian Idol took the stage he was hit by a barrage of full water bottles hurled at him from all sides.

He then faced a grilling from the Chief Minister Clare Martin about the loss of his trademark technicolour hair.

"Everyone loves you but what happened to your hair?," she asked.

Harding replied: "I thought I'd have a bit of a change, get rid of it."

Rap groups The Herd and The Hilltop Hoods held sway in the early evening.

The water had run out by the time the Living End got on stage and frontman Chris Cheney chided the thirsty crowd, saying there would be plenty to drink if it had not been hurled at Harding.

But he had them back on side by the end of the night, encouraging them to sing along.
